Pastor’s Job Description - General
Statement: We believe that Jesus Christ is the head of the church. We believe that the Holy Scriptures are the ruling authority over the Body of Christ and that they teach that the local church is congregationally governed, pastor led, and deacon served.
We are seeking a pastor who fits the following criteria:
Description:
A God-called pastor who will shepherd God’s flock with conviction, compassion, hospitality, vision and humility. (1 Timothy 3:2)
One who will instruct, exhort, and equip us in/for mission work and our mission to be a caring community of Christ-like disciple-makers. (Matt. 28:18-19; Eph. 4:11-16)
He is to provide leadership in all areas of church life and function and one who will conduct the ordinances (i.e. communion, baptism) and functions of worship according to God’s Word (Acts 20:28-32, 1 Pet. 5:1-4, 1 Tim. 1:3-4, Titus 1:5-9)
Duties and Expectations of the Pastor:
· He is to remain qualified according to the qualifications found in 1 Tim. 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9
· He is to study God’s Word and be prepared to teach and preach (2 Tim. 4:2)
· He is to be accessible in emergencies, and provide visitation to those who are sick, injured, and hospitalized. He is to endeavor to visit members in their homes, especially in times of physical and spiritual distress, providing comfort through counsel and prayer (Matt 25:39, James 5: 14-15, 1 Tim 4:12) The pastor is not responsible for doing all the ministry, but for seeing that it is done and done properly. (Eph. 4:11-16, 1 Cor. 14:40)
Serving Relationships:
The pastor serves in obedience to the scriptures and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
He is to respectfully receive counsel from the Deacons and fellow staff who serve the congregation.
He is to shepherd, manage and oversee the church according to the scriptures.
He will feed the Church Body through the Word and lead by example. (1 Pet.5:1-4, Heb. 13:7, Acts 20:28-32, 1 Tim. 1:3-4, 4:12, Acts 6:3-4, 1 Tim. 5:17-20)
Practical Functions:
The pastor will:
· Maintain a vital and personal relationship with the Lord through study and prayer.
· Set an example by maintaining proper priorities at home with his wife and children.
· Plan and conduct worship services, develop sermons, plan with music leadership and lead in the observance of ordinances (i.e. communion, baptism)
· Lead the congregation in effective programs to fulfill the Great Commission with vision, purpose and priority.
· Lead and demonstrate effective ways to witness and encourage sinners to believe the Gospel.
· Have set office hours and conduct pastoral counseling sessions, perform weddings and funeral services.
· Work with Deacons and other key leadership to carry out the mission and purpose of the church.
· Collaborate with South Yadkin Baptist Association, the Baptist State Convention of NC and the Southern Baptist Convention.
· Act as a moderator of/in business conferences and as an ex officio member recommending and advising committees and teams.
· Collaborate with the youth and children’s leaders.
· Work with other ministry and community leaders on behalf of the church in matters of mutual interest and concern.
· Oversee, with the assistance of deacons and staff all church discipline matters and the management of conflict issues in the church.
· Communicate with the congregation through articles or announcements, written and spoken, using church newsletters, bulletins, phone-tree and worship services.
· Work within the yearly church financial budget.
· Adhere to the Church Constitution and Bylaws adopted by the church.
Preferred but Not Required General Qualifications:
1. A Bachelor’s degree and a Seminary degree (completed or in process) with a concentration in theology and preaching preferred.
2. A seminary degree from a Southern Baptist seminary or a like-minded seminary in agreement with The Baptist Faith and Message.
3. Experience in and a demonstrated tendency toward leadership.
